Course: Human Resources Management for Supervisors and Managers
This 4-day interactive course required for Navy supervisors and managers covers all aspects of human resources management, including employee transition to supervision; management and leadership roles and responsibilities; equal employment opportunity; merit system principals and prohibitive personnel practices; workforce planning, skill acquisition and development; the new DoD Performance Management and Appraisal System (DPMAP); staffing, recruitment and merit promotion procedures; classification of positions and position management; and the basics of employee and labor relations management.
This course is customized to specific agency HR policies, practices and procedures. May be conducted in both 3 and 5 day lengths.
Course: HR Refresher Training for Supervisors and Managers
Supervisory development is under the spotlight across the federal government, as OPM amended its training and development regulations pertaining to the Federal Workforce Flexibility Act. All experienced supervisors must take 16 hours of HR refresher training every three years.
This 2-day interactive course provides the required HR refresher training for civilian and military supervisors who have completed initial HR supervisor training. Participants will review ethical behavior in the workplace; the hiring process; learn how to use the new DoD Performance Management and Appraisal System (DPMAP) in rating and developing staff; learn creative ways to engage, motivate and reward employees; address work-life balance issues; discuss difficult employee and labor relations issues and how to resolve them; and learn ways to mentor and coach staff on an ongoing basis.
Course: Understanding Human Behavior at Work
This 2-day course provides supervisors with training in the following areas:
- Understanding their personal Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI).
- Understanding how people’s type preferences affect their behavior.
- Understanding how each temperament type functions in the workplace.
- Apply typology when making leadership decisions.
- Maximizing team performance outcomes using Temperament and Type-Watching skills.
- Managing time effectively and dealing with stress.
This course is taught by an instructor certified in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
Course: Leadership for Supervisors
Supervisors have a variety of Human Resources (HR) management, and leadership roles and responsibilities. Just as supervisors must continuously hone and renew their technical and professional skills, they must also be aware of the latest leadership principles and apply the appropriate tools available for leading individuals and teams toward accomplishing strategic goals and objectives.
This 4-day Leadership for Supervisors course covers the OPM Federal and agency specific leadership competencies for supervisors. Supervisors will gain practical knowledge and solid hands-on skills needed to maximize their roles as a supervisor and drive their team’s performance. The course is highly interactive with small group activities and exercises, practical hand-on role plays, lectures, videos, and each participant is given the Myers Briggs Inventory (MBTI).
The major topics include: Taking Charge of Your Job; Managing the Work; Leading People, and Communicating Effectively.
Course: Leadership Skills for Non-Supervisors
This 2-day course is designed for DoD civilian employees who are not currently in supervisory or managerial positions but have responsibility for leading others in teams and cooperative work assignments. The role of a non-supervisor leader is increasingly important as your activity goes through organizational changes and redirection. The “Main Objective” is on mission accomplishment, performance management and developing high performance in others. Non-supervisors must engage in a more “bottom-up, more empowering and influencing approach.”
Today’s leaders are moving away from the authoritative or prescriptive style toward that of a facilitator. As a non-supervisor you perform a variety of leadership roles and processes. There is a direct link between understanding yourself, the quality of leadership and the effectiveness you demonstrate to your organization. As a non-supervisor, you are more effective when you:
- Understand yourself and how you can contribute to the mission.
- Understand the importance of person-to-person influence, versus position-to-position authority.
- Demonstrate accountability for your own actions.
- Influence the actions and efforts of others in the services provided to the customer.
- Personally take ownership in the organization strategic plan and guide others in accomplishing established goals.
- Live the organizational values, making them real through your words and actions each and every day.
Course: Onboarding–Civilian Personnel Management
This 1-day course provides employees with “What You Need to Know” in the different areas of Civilian Personnel Management. Participants will learn about employee responsibilities and specific accountabilities in the areas of Equal Employment Opportunity, positions descriptions and classification, staffing and job recruitment, performance management and appraisals, training and career development, recognition and award systems, leave and attendance responsibilities, corrective disciplinary actions, and employee union rights.
Understanding the basic civilian personnel principles, policies, practices and procedures will assist the employee in “taking ownership, carrying out the job responsibilities, and managing their career.” The course is not intended to make the employee an expert in civilian personnel matters but will provide a “performance roadmap” and where to gather more information when needed.
Course: Prevention of Sexual Harassment
This 4 –hour course will describe sexual harassment and its effect on the victim, harasser, and the workplace. The liability of the agency and the supervisor will be covered, including examples of specific case law.
Participants will learn what management and employee rights and responsibilities are regarding allegations of sexual harassment. Also covered in this course are the steps management and employees can take to prevent sexual harassment.
Course: Using Behavior Based Interviewing
This 1-day course provides an assessment process for selecting employees using behavioral based interviewing techniques. Participants will learn how to make better predictions of applicant talent and job performance success, based on actual past behaviors.
Role-Play activities will provide hands-on experience as to what legal questions to ask and what questions to avoid when conducting interviews. Participants will gain experience in designing behavior based interview questions that will solicit demonstrated behaviors and skills.
Course: Time Management
This 1-day course begins with an “in-box” exercise containing telephone calls, e-mail messages, meetings, visitor requests, changes in work assignments, and special projects. Each participant will review what is in their “in-box” and determine a process for how they would distinguish what is most critical, important or useful and be able to justify how they would accomplish the assignments in a timely manner.
Participants will learn time management tips for simplifying their jobs, which include: Making a Task List; Setting Priorities and Workflow Distribution; and Self-Motivation Techniques.
Common time wasters will be discussed and a personalized action plan for monitoring, analyzing, and revising the plan will be developed.
Workshop: You Can Make The Difference!!! Customer Relations
Employees, team leaders and supervisors must be focused and energized by the organization Strategic Mission, Vision, Corporate Values, Goals and Objectives of their organization. Employees can achieve great results when customer commitment and day to day performance becomes the centerpiece of the organizations servicing mission.
This 1-day workshop will address Six Performance Gauges that are the foundation for delivering extraordinary customer service. Through lectures, small group and role-play activities, and video discussions, each participant will have an opportunity to access how they currently provide customer service and practical ways to improve quality and deliver responsive customer service.
Workshop: Coaching for High Performance
This 1-day workshop is intended for all levels of supervision. It is all about Leadership-Coaching. As the Federal DoD organization are transforming, so should its leadership. High performance is not an option; it is a requirement for the survival of individuals and the organization. The Leader-Coach is responsible for providing a work environment where employees can enhance their talents, focus on strengths, and perform at their best.
The Leader-Coach plays a critical role in making the new DoD Personnel Management and Appraisal Program (DPMAP) work successfully. Topics addressed include Leader-Coaching, communications, trust, performance management, recognition and rewards.
The workshop is highly interactive with small group activities, lectures, and the showing and discussion of two video tapes: The Art of Coaching in Business and Would You Follow Me.
Workshop: Mentoring Seminar for Mentors
This 1-day course provides managers with the skills and tools essential for Mentoring employees. Participants will learn what Mentoring is; the desired Mentor characteristics, roles, and responsibilities; strategies for overcoming obstacles in the relationship; and the benefits of Mentoring.
Basic skill building exercises and role-play counseling will be used to assist managers in cultivating a successful Mentor/employee relationship.
Workshop: Formulating a Strategic Plan
A variety of consulting services are available to assist in your Strategic Planning Process. You can pick and choose from among these services or we can adapt these to fit your Strategic Planning workshop needs:
(1) Facilitate a One, Two or Three-day Strategic Planning Workshop. Outputs include a vision statement, mission statement, guiding principles or values, goals, strategies and objectives.
(2) Planning and Assessment Consulting Services. Assist your organizations in developing a corporate strategic plan or updating an existing plan. The following services are available to make your Strategic Planning Workshop more effective and efficient:
- Two 4-hour classes: Preparing for the Strategic Plan and Group Dynamics and Team Work for the Strategic Planning Team.
- Environmental Assessment: Analysis of the past, present, and future data that will be used to guide the strategic planning process. We will assist in the identification and assessment of major trends and forces that will affect your corporation by:
– Evaluation of interests of external individuals, groups and customers important to the organization. – Expectations of people inside the organization (Employee Survey and Telephone interviews with supervisors and managers). – Data Base of past performance and current situation.
The Environmental Assessment should produce an accurate list of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that companies will need for setting long range goals and establishing program strategies.
(3) On-going Consulting Service and Advice. Available to organizations that have completed a strategic planning process.
